Foi um dos cientistas mais polémicos da segunda metade do século XX, concebeu a teoria de Gaia, segundo a qual a Terra tem de ser vista como um todo que se autorregula (teoria que o levou para a margem da comunidade científica nos anos 60 e que a partir dos anos 90 lhe valeu reconhecimento internacional).
Acaba de publicar um livro "The Revenge of Gaia" anunciando uma inevitável catástrofe ambiental para daqui a a 60 ou 80 anos.
